Releading a Nave Window Without Losing Its Glass
Preparing for Our Next Preservation Project at St. Michael’s
We’re getting ready for our next project: restoring four exterior doors at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, located at 225 West 99th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan.
St. Michael’s parish was founded in 1807, when this part of Manhattan was still known as Bloomingdale. The church has grown alongside the neighborhood, and its present building—the third on the site—was designed by architect Robert W. Gibson and dedicated in 1891. The limestone church also features decorative work by the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, reflecting the care and artistry found throughout this historic place.
Our work on the four exterior doors will begin with a careful assessment of each one. We’ll preserve sound original material, repair areas affected by age and weather, and prepare and protect the surfaces with finishes suited to the doors and their exposure. Our goal is to respect their character while improving their condition, function, and durability.
We look forward to sharing the progress as this project takes shape. Thoughtful restoration helps historic buildings remain welcoming and useful for generations to come.
